Ernesto is one of many FARC guerrillas about to lay down his weapon while continuing to fight for the poor – this time through lawful means. The Colombian Government and the leftist FARC guerrilla movement have negotiated a peace agreement which would end the longest lasting conflict in the western world. The guerrillas would hand over their arms in exchange for political participation and improvements for the campesinos, countryside farmers.
Dreaming of toppling the current elite, Ernesto is not faced with an easy task as the Government is not fully living up to its own end of the peace agreement. The much celebrated Colombian peace process throws the already torn-apart society into chaos in which everyone is afraid for their own survival, wanting to guarantee either their privileges or just their basic needs.
While Ernesto strives for a change in society, opposing forces arise: A passionate right-wing politician, and a descendant of Spanish conquistadors both want to rescue the country from FARC terrorists. Some seek even to tear the peace agreement to pieces. On the other hand, the deprived farmers earning a living from coca production could get out of poverty, but only if the peace deal is respected.
What happens to a very fragile peace in an unequal country if doing the ‘wrong’ thing may easily be justified as the only means of struggle? Are people capable of stopping the cycle of violence that has lasted for centuries? Colombia in My Arms is a film depicting people balancing at the edge of their morals while striving for contradictory dreams for a better Colombia.
