Docpoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival

Programme (2020)

Conductivity (2020)

World premiere!

”Stop, stop now”, conductor Hannu Lintu shouts in the background as 21-year-old James Kahane rehearses with the orchestra. The Finnish conductor education is a worldwide phenomenon. Anna-Karin Grönroos’ documentary Conductivity follows three students from Sibelius Academy’s Orchestral Conducting programme for three years.

The lush trees of the spring, terrace weather, sleepy city streets lit by Christmas lights and winter swimming seem to exist for entirely different people, as James Kahane, Emilia Hoving and I-Han Fu solemnly study their scores. In the darkness of Helsinki’s Musiikkitalo, they listen to straightforward criticism on their conducting from their teachers. “You mustn’t be soft!”, ”That looks like you’re beating a carpet!”, ”Just look at the people!” are some of the instructions from Susanna Mälkki, Hannu Lintu and Atso Almila.

The soundtrack drives the story of the young conductors learning about bravery and charisma. They are all waiting for the opportunity to lead a symphony orchestra. Suddenly the opportunity arises.
